Rules for Riders
- Must be registered in the pit zone, or have a paper waiver
- Must have lights (Jan, Feb, March)
- Stay behind the ride leader
- it’s ok to designate a rider as the trail leader
- Stay ahead of the sweep
- Road: learn to ride like roadies
- Smooth and steady
- Wheels on the ground, stay in line, hands on bars
- Learn to draft, to be predictable
- Why?
- Speed, cars, asphalt - all very unforgiving
- Good to learn how to ride in a close pack - skills for safe race starts
- Dirt: ride respectfully
- Respect the trail
- Respect yourself
- Repect others
- What exactly to call out?
- Use judgement here on what to call
- Expect wheels off ground - teach kids to leave space
- Tell your riders if you’re not comfortable with something
Protocol for Problems
Teach, Warn, Call, Exclude.
- Teach the rules, make the consequences clear right up front
- Warn the rider once (and only once) when you see something you aren’t going to tolerate
- Call parents if it happens again
- Make sure other ride leaders are aware of warnings, calls, etc
- If we have a candidate for Exclude, we’ll decide exactly what that looks like as a group
Abuse Awareness
- If you see something talk to the person in charge
- all primary leaders need to be aware.
- John V, Mark, Frank, Ben, Christy, Rich
- Exceptions - know your risk, minimize your risk
- Driving athletes - possible, but know the risk.
- Sweeping single riders - inevitable, so keep the exposure minimal.
Licensing
- Must be level one to ride with the team
- Visitors can ride once with a paper waver, but must stay with licensed coach.
- Bring a blank waiver and a pen to practices?
- Strongly prefer level 2 or 3 to lead a subgroup
- Ideally level 3 to be in charge of the plan for the weekday
- John V, Christy, Frank, Mark, Rich
Take Attendance
- Take a picture!
- Google sheet, mark attendance
- Be sure to communicate any reportable injuries
Ride Prep
- Encourage riders to bring
- Spare tube, water, snack, jacket, multi-tool
- Bonus for pump, chain tool, etc
- Pushups if no tube/water/tool?
- Be sure to bring these things yourself plus also consider:
- First aid kit
- Emergency contacts
- Spare food & water
